Kawhi Leonard is staying in Toronto.
The Toronto Raptors have agreed to a two-year, $115 million contract extension with the seven-time All-Star, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The agreement also includes a player option for the 2028-29 season.
Leonard’s agent, Harrison Gaines of SLASH Sports, confirmed the agreement to ESPN.
The extension comes just days after Toronto officially reacquired Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers in a blockbuster trade that sent Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a first-round pick swap and two second-round picks to Los Angeles.
Leonard, 35, previously spent the 2018-19 season in Toronto and delivered the franchise’s first NBA championship while winning Finals MVP.
Now, the two-time Finals MVP is back in Toronto with a much longer-term commitment.
According to ESPN, Leonard’s new extension gives him a total of three years and $165 million on his Raptors contract. He also took less than his maximum extension amount and waived his $7.45 million trade kicker, giving Toronto additional salary-cap flexibility. (ESPN.com)
Leonard is coming off the highest-scoring season of his NBA career. He averaged 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists over 65 games for the Clippers last season and earned All-NBA Second Team honors. (NBA.com)
The new deal could keep Leonard in Toronto through the 2028-29 season, when he would have the opportunity to exercise his player option.
The Raptors aren’t simply bringing back the star who helped deliver their first championship.
They’re now building their next chapter with Kawhi Leonard back in the fold.
